MYSOLATION, 2020
MYSOLATION is a series of self-portraits I took while isolating in my studio in Brooklyn during the lockdown in April and May 2020, consisting of 53 images taken on 28 different days.
I wanted to create a visual diary of this unique time of global loneliness and connect with the viewer through MYSOLATION. We are in this together and share the same fears and feel the same heaviness in our hearts during this ongoing pandemic.
MYSOLATION became my therapy. In fact, mid-project, my therapist died of Covid-19. On that day, I laid down, curled up in the fetal position, and wrote, "I Feel so Alone" on the black wall behind me.
Later on, in the editing phase, seeing myself and in close-up, I was confronted with my imperfections, my aging, and the extra quarantine pounds. It challenged my vanity and how I see myself. There is a fine line between baring myself and applying the filter I wanted to be seen through - as well as how I want to see myself.
MYSOLATION is about gaining a deeper self-awareness by becoming vulnerable, becoming my own best friend, facing my fears and inner contradictions, expressing my emotions and fantasies, and, most importantly, radically accepting myself.
